Witte de Withstraat Rotterdam: alternative shopping

Witte de Withstraat is known as the artistic and innovative street of Rotterdam. In this street you will find alternative boutiques and restaurants, nice pubs and some nice art galleries with ever changing exhibitions. The atmosphere at Witte de Withstraat in Rotterdam is relaxed and cultural, in contrast to the busy shopping areas in Rotterdam city centre like Lijnbaan and Koopgoot. Witte de Withstraat connects the Maritime Museum with the Rotterdam Museumpark and from Lijnbaan you can easily walk there via Schiedamse Vest ( restaurant Gusto) or via Schilderstraat.

Shopping at Schilderstraat Rotterdam

At the corner of Schiedamse Vest and Witte de Withstraat (at Club Blender) you can make a short detour into Schilderstraat to visit a couple of interesting shops, such as Danny de Cactus, where you’ll find a big collection of exotic cactuses and many decoration accessories from Morocco, Iran, Turkey, Indonesia, Egypt, Syria and Pakistan. Label Armeni creates custom dresses for special occasions or you can choose some off-the-peg fashion from their showroom. Also stop at the Bagel Bakery for a fresh home-made bagel or for a combination of Jewish and Arab dishes in the evening. Last but not least the Margreeth Olsthoorn shop is located at Schilderstraat 5 in Rotterdam. Olsthoorn is known for her stylish men’s and women’s designer fashion from Rick Owen, Viktor & Rolf and Comme Des Garcons.

One of the first stores that you come across at Witte de Withstraat is the Marlies Dekkers’ Lingerie shop. This famous fashion desginer from Rotterdam has conquered the world with her exclusive underwear and opened her first shop in Rotterdam. A little further down Witte de Withstraat, you will come across Betsy Palmer’s shoe store with sexy boots with heels and fashionable pumps. The Paraddy store next door is a specialist shop for ballet dance wear and shoes. Gallery Ecce offers a large collection of contemporary art and Gallery van Eijk offers modern art, paintings, sculptures, bronze and ceramics. For a delicious Italian meal or lunch stop at Oliva. If you prefer an Oriental meal then cross Witte de Withstraat and dine at Wereldeethuis Bazar with their popular outdoor terrace. On the corner with Hartmansstraat you will find home decoration store Dirkx. Make a small detour into Hartmansstraat and vist Klein Beginnen en G rooot. These shops sell trendy maternity, baby and clothing for kids under12.

Witte de Withstraat: arts, culture and great pubs

On your right you will see showroom MAMA with exhibitions of expressive arts. A little further down Witte de Withstraat you can stop at Eetcafe Opa (Grandpa’s pub), a cozy old-Dutch eatery with a daily changing special. Walk further and visit R.S.I. The Attraction, specialized in fun sports with a large collection of skates, snowboard clothing, snowboards, roller skates, frisbees and kites. Across the street you will find the Witte de With Contemporary Art, an international art institution with exhibitions of modern and contemporary art. Opposite this Center for Contemporary Art you will see Hung Kee, a Chinese snack bar that is very popular among clubbers due to their late opening hours. Walk further towards Nieuw Rotterdams Café, located at the beautiful former NRC newspaper office. At the other side of Witte de Withstraat, Café De Witte Aap is located, the best bar in the world according to Lonely Planet. Opposite Witte Aap, you will see Goliath, a nice boutique with trendy shoes. Towards the end of the Witte de Withstraat you will come along a number of dining options such as IEZ, Termarsch & Co Hamburgers and Werelds. Here you also find the one of a kind Hostel King Kong. From there you can cross Eendrachtsweg to the Rotterdam Museumpark, with famous museums like Boijmans – Van Beuningen, the Kunsthal and the Netherlands Architecture Institute. You can also turn right and walk back to the shops at the Oude Binnenweg.
