The Dutch Photo Museum in Rotterdam is one of Europe’s most versatile photo museums. The museum shows exhibitions about photography and administers a multifaceted collection of negatives, transparencies and prints, made by more than eighty Dutch photographers. You will enjoy photography from all fields varying from journalism, architecture, fashion, nature, sports and advertising.
The photographs in the collection were created by both Dutch and international photographers who worked as a freelancer or on a commission basis. The Photos were used by many different clients such as theatre companies, fashion houses, industry and the public sector. The collection of the Nederlands Fotomuseum includes pictures of various 20th century subjects, such as the Second World War, the disastrous floods of 1953, the decolonisation of Indonesia, but also themes like the Beatles or the Port of Rotterdam. Pictures were taken n nearly every city in the Netherlands and during many foreign travels. Both major and minor events were recorded, showing a lively image of the social developments in the 20th century.
There have been many exhibitions in the Nederlands Fotomuseum covering all kinds of subjects varying from World Cup Football, Jazz, the development of the port of Rotterdam, the emperor’s wardrobe, China contemporary art, Phil Collins, Iraq, popart and babies. The Nederlands Fotomuseum is also the national expertise centre for photography and houses a photo restoration workshop. There’s also a museum shop where you can buy the latest books about Dutch photography or beautiful and remarkable prints from their collection.
The Nederlands Fotomuseum is located on Wilhelminapier at Wilhelminakade 332 near the Erasmus Bridgeand the New Luxor Theatre. From Rotterdam Central Station, get there by metro (stop Wilhelminaplein) or tram 20 or 25 and walk from there. Travel in style by Watertaxi, which stops just in front of Hotel New York.
Pay to park your car in the World Port Center parking, in the Q-Park underneath the Maas Tower , or in the surrounding streets. You can also get there by crossing the brand new Rijnhavenbrug pedestrian bridge from Katendrecht, the peninsula where museum steamer ss Rotterdam is moored.
